Export your recipes anytime
Every recipe you save in Pinch of This can leave with you: print it, copy it, or download your whole cookbook as a backup you own.
A recipe app should never hold your recipes hostage. Pinch of This lets you export a single recipe in the format you need, or download your entire collection as a portable backup, on every plan. The subscription pays for unlimited storage and AI imports, never for access to your own data.
Export one recipe
Open any recipe and choose Export from the action row next to Remix and Cooked. Pick the format that fits where the recipe is going:
- Print or PDF. A clean printed layout with the title, photo, servings, cook time, ingredients, directions with their section headings, notes, tags, and source. Use your browser's print dialog to save it as a PDF.
- Markdown. A
.mdfile with front matter for the title, source, servings, cook time, tags, and favorite status, then Ingredients, Directions, and Notes sections. Ideal for Obsidian, Notion, or any notes app. - Plain text. The same recipe without markup, ready to paste into a message or email.
- JSON-LD. A standard Schema.org Recipe document, the same structure recipe websites publish, so other apps and tools can read it. App-only details such as notes and favorites travel in a separate
pinchOfThisobject so the standard part stays valid.
Every text format also offers Copy to clipboard, which works on every device.
Download your whole cookbook
Open your account settings and choose Export & Backup. Export all of your recipes, only your favorites, or everything under one tag. Pinch of This builds a ZIP archive that contains:
- A
manifest.jsonwith the export date, recipe and photo counts, your tags, and a checksum for each recipe file. - One JSON file per recipe in the Pinch of This backup format, which preserves every field: ingredients, directions with sections, servings, cook time, notes, tags, favorite and cooked dates, source, nutrition, and both English and Spanish translations.
- One Markdown file per recipe, identical to the single-recipe export.
- Your recipe photos.
Keep the archive in your own cloud drive or on a hard disk. It restores losslessly through Import recipes, and the Markdown files are readable anywhere without Pinch of This.
What export does not change
- Exporting never deletes or alters a recipe.
- Recipes you have deleted are not included.
- Shared recipes you accepted from friends export like your own.
- Each archive holds up to 500 recipes and 200 MB of photos; larger collections export in a few passes by tag or favorites.
Why this matters for a family cookbook
Handwritten cards fade and websites disappear. If you have digitized your family's recipe cards or filled a digital recipe box over the years, a backup you control is the last step. Export once a season, or before any big change, and the collection survives a lost phone, a closed account, or a switch to another app.
Export questions
Do I need a subscription to export?
No. Export works on every plan, including free accounts and accounts whose subscription has ended. Your recipes are yours.
What is in the backup file?
A ZIP with a manifest, one JSON and one Markdown file per recipe, and your recipe photos. The JSON is the Pinch of This backup format and restores every field, including English and Spanish translations.
Can I export more than one recipe at a time?
Yes. From Export & Backup in your account settings you can export all recipes, your favorites, or everything under one tag. Each archive holds up to 500 recipes.
Does the export include nutrition facts?
Nutrition is estimated from your ingredients, so it is included in the JSON-LD export marked as derived and left out of Markdown and text, which keep the recipe itself.
Can I print a recipe from the iPhone app?
Print is available on the web and Android today. Inside the iOS app use Markdown, plain text, or copy to clipboard; native printing there is coming with a later app update.
